What is the Play Chess?
ToolSink Chess is a single-player board where you control White against Stockfish playing Black. Stockfish runs as a browser Web Worker and receives the current position through the standard UCI protocol. The search is set to depth 5, providing quick replies and an approachable browser game rather than exposing the engine's full competitive strength.
The board uses standard chess movement and legality rules supplied by chess.js. An illegal drag is rejected, turns are enforced, and the game recognizes checkmate, draws and stalemate. The squares involved in the latest move are highlighted, while a checked king receives a red highlight and a written warning. The interface does not provide a dialog for choosing a promotion piece.
There is no account, matchmaking, rating or move history panel. A restart control immediately returns every piece to its opening square and stops the current engine search. This makes the game suited to a quick practice match, testing candidate moves over the board, or introducing legal chess play without installing a dedicated application.
How to use the Play Chess
- 1Wait for the board to initialize; your White pieces begin at the bottom.
- 2Drag a White piece from its square to a legal destination. An illegal move returns to its starting square.
- 3Wait while Stockfish calculates and plays Black's reply, then continue until a game-over result appears.
- 4Use Restart Game or Play Again to reset the board and begin from the standard opening position.
When to use the Play Chess
- Playing a short practice game against a consistent computer opponent without creating an account.
- Rehearsing opening principles such as development, king safety and controlling the center from White's side.
- Teaching a beginner why a move is illegal or how check, checkmate and stalemate end a game.

Important notes
- Engine depth 5 is deliberately limited for responsiveness and is much weaker than Stockfish at tournament analysis settings.
- The game does not save positions, notation, ratings or completed games; refreshing or restarting discards the current match.
- There is no color choice, undo, hint, clock or online opponent.
- Engine calculation occurs in your browser after the Stockfish script has loaded.
Frequently asked questions
How strong is the computer opponent?
It uses Stockfish, but only searches to depth 5. That is designed for fast browser responses and does not represent the engine's maximum strength.
Can I play as Black?
No. The current game always assigns White to the player and Black to Stockfish.
What happens if I try an illegal move?
The move is rejected and the piece returns. You must also answer a check with a legal move that makes your king safe.
Can I save or export the game?
No. There is no PGN export or persistent game history, so record important moves separately.
